Late-appearing abscesses after injections of nonabsorbable hydrogel polymer for HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy.

چکیده
Avariety of injectable fillers have been employed to correct the stigmatizing facial lipoatrophy associated with HIV infection. A novel filler is Bio-Alcamid (Bio-Alcamid, Polymekon, Milan, Italy), which has been described as an injectable ‘‘endoprosthesis.’’ This nonbiodegradable filler is composed of 96% water and 4% synthetic polymer polyalkylamide and is purported to be biologically inert. BioAlcamid is intended for large-volume augmentation as may be necessary in hemifacial lipoatrophy (Romberg’s disease) or HIV-associated lipoatrophy. Bio-Alcamid is intended for injection into the subcutaneous space in a bolus form. Fibroplasia ensues around the periphery of the balloon-like implant creating an injectable ‘‘prosthesis.’’ Recent reports have documented the success of Bio-Alcamid for the treatment of HIV facial lipoatrophy. We report a series of five patients who have received Bio-Alcamid for HIV associated lipoatrophy and who have developed late-appearing streptococcal bacterial abscesses. In all cases the abscesses resolved with incision and drainage and antibiotic therapy.

In “Complications After Facial Injections With Permanent Fillers: Important Limitations and Considerations of MRI Evaluation,” the authors propose the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as an investigative tool in the assessment of delayed-onset complications subsequent to injections of permanent fillers. Utilization of this investigative imaging tool is proposed to be helpful in assessing...
متن کاملPolyacrylamide hydrogel injection in the management of human immunodeficiency virus-related facial lipoatrophy: a 2-year clinical experience.
BACKGROUND Facial lipoatrophy is defined as the reduction in buccal and orbital fat pads along with a more global loss of fat within the subcutaneous tissue. It is the most common and distressing sign of human immunodeficiency virus-associated lipodystrophy. Injectable polyacrylamide hydrogel (Aquamid) is a synthetic nonbiodegradable polymer consisting of a minor backbone of 2.5 percent cross-l...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of Perlane, an injectable form of hyaluronic acid, for the correction of HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING A prospective, observational study in a consecutive series of 18 HIV-positive males with facial lipoatrophy injected with Perlane. Fourteen patients were available for final analysis. RESULTS Mean follow-up time was 12 months. Bas...
متن کاملSafety of poly-L-lactic acid (New-Fill®) in the treatment of facial lipoatrophy: a large observational study among HIV-positive patients
BACKGROUND Facial lipoatrophy is a frequently reported condition associated with use of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) acid has been used to correct facial lipoatrophy in people with HIV since 2004 both in Europe and the United States. The objective of this study was to establish, in real life conditions and in a large sample, the safety of PLLA (New Fill®, Valeant US, Si...
متن کاملA longitudinal evaluation of the impact of a polylactic acid injection therapy on health related quality of life amongst HIV patients treated with anti-retroviral agents under real conditions of use
BACKGROUND Many HIV patients receiving antiretroviral treatment develop lipodystrophy. NEW-FILL® is a polylactic acid injected to treat facial lipoatrophy. The objectives of this study were to describe (1) change in quality of life (QoL) of HIV patients treated with NEW-FILL® in the management of facial lipoatrophy; (2) efficacy of NEW-FILL® using facial photographs and (3) a patient-reported "...
